Midtbygda served as the administrative center for the kommune until 2020. The name of this kommune comes from the Norwegian word for smoke "røyk" and, since smoke is hard to portray, fire is used on its shield.   The name of the kommune is actually derived from an old farm name. It shares the peninsula between Drammensfjord and Oslofjord with the municipality of Hurum. The community is served by Røyken church.

Hurum, Røyken and Asker were three independent municipalities from 1837 to 2020. On January 1, 2020, the three municipalities were merged into the new Asker municipality. Asker is today Norway's 8th largest municipality with 100,000 inhabitants.
