The coat of arms for Lier celebrates its agriculture - fruits, berries, vegetables and flowers. The administrative hub of the kommune is Lierbyen.
Colonel Hans Heg of the 15th Wisconsin (Scandinavian Regiment) was born in Lier. He died at the Battle of Chickamauga. There is a statue of Heg on the capitol grounds in Madison, Wisconsin. Norwegian-Americans placed a statue of Heg in Lierbyen as well.
